Italian Max Angelelli was the quickest man at the Portugese enclave yesterday but he used a new set of tyres for his final effort, something that Tom didn't do. The decisive second qualifying session will be held today (Friday). We'll let you know the results as soon as possible. If you happen to see the race on TV: Tom will be driving car number 5. 11 November 1996 Check out the official site of the Macau Grand Prix which will take place this weekend. After the cancellation of the final race we can give you a points survey of the Japanese F3 championship. The points of the top 3 drivers in the final standings are shown.
The numbers shows in brackets are deducted points, only 6 out of 8 results count. Points system: 1st place: 9 points, 2nd: 6 points, 3rd: 4 points, 4th: 3, 5th: 2 and 6th 1. 21 October 1996 The final race of the Japanese Formula three race has been cancelled. Due to incoming darkness the organisers could not allow the race to be started. Whether the race will be rescheduled or not is currently not known to us. Because of this uncertainty we cannot give you the final championship standings. 18 October 1996 Takashi Yokoyama will team up alongside Tom Coronel for the traditional Formula 3 shoot out at Macau. Yokoyama drove in the British F3 series for TOM's this year. The Macau race will be held on 17 November in the streets of the Portugese enclave. 12 October 1996
Sorry, Sorry, Sorry. Confusion on our side about the chances for Tom in the championship. Apparently the Japanese regulations are using a system in which the 3 worst results of the 9 races are being scratched. Thus Coronel is no longer a championship contender, thats what he told on RTL5 television. His 6 best results currently are 1 win and 5 second places. Should he win the final race he will gain 9 points but 6 points will be substracted. Thus his maximum score for this year can only come to 42 points against Wakisaka's current 44. The championship will now be decided between Wakisaka and Yamanishi.
29 September 1996
Tom Coronel again finished second in a Japanese F3 race, his fifth in this year's championship. In Suzuka, the one but last race of the championship, he had to let go the young hot-shot Yamanishi. Juichi Wakisaka finished in third, which was enough to clinch the title. The championship standings are as follows: 1 Juichi Wakisaka 44, 2 Koji Yamanishi 42, 3 TOM CORONEL 39. 8 September 1996 Tom Coronel did not manage to continue his winning streak. After a race long battle, he finished second behind Juichi Wakisaka in the 7th round of the championship at Sendai. "I tried to push, push, push from the start", said Coronel, "but Wakisaka was very quick on the straights and I had to brake very late into the corners to stand a chance of passing him." Takeshi Tsuchiya finished in third. Wakisaka still leads in the championship with 44 points, second is Coronel on 39 points, third is Yamanishi with 33 points. 25 August 1996 Tom Coronel tested the British spec TOM'S 036F at Pembrey. He did some development work on the British version of the TOM'S car that he uses in the Far East. 4 August 1996
It finally happened: Tom Coronel scored his FIRST VICTORY in Formula 3!!! 8 July 1996 Tom Coronel finished fourth in the Suzuka F3 race. The race was won by Juichi Wakisaka who is now leading the championship with 34 points, Tom is third in the championship on 24 points. 20 June 1996 Tom Coronel is one of the drivers mentioned to drive the third TOM'S car in the British F3 championship. TOM'S boss Hiroshi Fushida will chose a driver in the near future. Frenchman Jeremy Dufour is also among the favourites. In the meantime Tom has got an improved car for the second half of the championship, which resumes at 7 July in Suzuka. 26 May 1996 Tom is going for a new record: 4 second places in five F3 races. Indeed he scored another one this weekend at Fuji, the fourth race of the championship. The race was won by the young hot shot Yamanishi. Tom is now second in the championship on 21 points, Wakisaka is still in the lead with 25 points. Surely a win cannot be that far away now! Tom gets a bit of a break now as the next F3 round will take place on 7 July at Suzuka. 19 May 1996
Another second place for Tom Coronel. This time he finished just behind Germany's Marcel Tiemann in the Monaco F3 race. For this occasion only, Tom swapped his regular TOM's Toyota for a Prema racing Dallara-Fiat. 12 May 1996 Tom Coronel finished second in the Mine F3 race, the third round of the Japanese championship. Coronel pressed hard to overtake poleman Yamanishi. The 18 year old Japanese F3 rookie however, withstood the pressure and went on to score his first F3 victory. Coronel is now second in the championship on 18 points, behind Juichi Wakisaka (21). 22 April 1996 Tom Coronel finished 4rd in the second race of the Japanese F3 series. Tom finished behind the Wakisaka brothers and Fujita. Tom started well from pole position, but had a coming together with Fujita on lap 2 in which he lost his front wing. The championship is now being led by J. Wakisaka (18 points) with Coronel and S. Wakisaka joint second on 9 points. 21 April 1996 Tom Coronel put his TOM's Toyota on pole position for the Tsukuba race, the second race of the Japanese F3 championship. 11 April 1996
Tom Coronel will drive in the Monaco F3 race. For this race only, which is supporting the F1 Grand Prix, Tom will swap his TOM's Toyota for a Dallara Opel. His car will be run by the Italian Prema PowerTeam. Other drivers for this team are André Couto and Joao Barbosa.
8 April 1996
Tom Coronel won the opening race of the brand new DUTCH Touring Car Championship. He started the race from pole position in his Citroen ZX. During the race Tom suffered from a broken exhaust pipe, which made a GREAT sound!! In the closing stages he almost managed to spin the car by driving over his own exhaust pipe which had come loose from the car. March 1996 Tom Coronel finished second in the first race of the season in Suzuka. The race was won by Wakisaka, Nishimiya came home third. March 1996 Tom Coronel will contest the 1996 Japanese Formula 3 series for the factory TOM's Toyota team. It will be his second full year in Formula 3 after contesting the German series in 1995 with WTS racing.
